There are a number of injections that can be performed in order to decrease pain, inflammation and alleviate the need for surgery. These include:
Epidural blocks are a mixture of anesthetic and steroid injected into the fluid around the spinal nerves
Facet injections decrease inflammation in the posterior joints of the spine
Intradiscal injections help to "wash out" the disc and provide relief of discogenic pain
Cortizone Injections relieve pain by decreasing inflammation in a joint.
Synvisc Injections help to relieve knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis. It is used in patients who do not get relief from simple painkillers or physical therapy.
Supartz Injections are similar to Synvisc injections but the product Supartz acts as an oil cushion to lubricate the knee joint.
Hyaluronic Acid: Some hyaluronic acid is already in the fluid in your joints. In people with osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid gets thinner. When this happens, there isn't enough hyaluronic acid to protect the joint. Injections can put more hyaluronic acid into your knee joint to help protect it.
Physical therapy can help by decreasing spasm of the musculature of the spine. Strengthening the core muscles (those surrounding the spine and abdominals) one can better support the spine and decrease discomfort. Therapy can also help to improve posture and decrease mechanical back pain. Two specific types of therapy we currently order are McKenzie and MedX. McKenzie therapy is a specific type of back exercises used to treat disc herniation. MedX therapy utilizes a machine to target the paraspinous muscles. The machine allows for instant feedback of effort and improvement.
Many hand disorders can be treated with Hand Therapy. A hand therapist is an Occupational Therapist with a special certification in hand. Working with the hand therapist improves outcomes for those patients treated with hand symptoms both pre- and post-operatively.
Much of the pain felt in those with chronic back/neck pain is due to inflammation. Often if the inflammation is decreased so is the pain. There are a variety of these on the market some even over the counter. In the past few years there has research has coronary risk to be increased by the use of these medications. Please speak with your physician before beginning treating your pain with anti-inflammatories. Some of these medications can cause stomach discomfort. Dr. Lorio helped to introduce Mobic to the Tri-cities area which is one of the NSAIDs that does not cause stomach problems.
A brace can help to support the spine and decrease back pain. For more information on those available visit www.victoryop.com.

Similar to the Dynesys, the Isobar TTL is performed from the back of the spine. It is a flexible rod which allows for all directions of movement through the affected level.
